Social Perception of Autonomous Mobility: Dataset of a Swiss Survey of Public Transport Pilots

Self-driving (autonomous) shuttles have been piloted in various street trials worldwide. Between 2016 and 2022, the Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) reported ten pilot trials of autonomous vehicles for public transportation in Switzerland. This dataset presents data from surveys conducted after the pilot testing of a driverless public transport service in two Swiss cantons, Schaffhausen and Valais (Wallis). The surveys explore factors influencing public support for policies facilitating transitions to disruptive technologies, focusing on how concerns—particularly risk perception—affect the acceptance process among citizens. The study examines changes in public acceptance of and concerns about self-driving vehicles before and after the implementation of two autonomous bus services in Switzerland. In addition to the dataset, we attach a R-script to help explore the dataset through summarization, visualization, and statistical analysis.
