Norwegian orca vocal activity annotations

This document describes annotations of vocal activity segments of killer whale vocalisations. These manually produced annotations may support empirical investigations into the acoustic communication of wild orcas as well as the development of machine-learning algorithms to identify vocal activity segments. The annotation procedure is described such that more such annotations can be generated with minimal misunderstanding among annotators. The annotations of vocal activity segments contain the onset and offset of killer whale calls and additional information on the calls. The audio files in this dataset constitute a small subset of the audio data from Operation WhaleSonic which have been recorded in northern Norway and contain vocalisations of wild animals (Rychen et al. 2026).
