Fish Regions

The fish regions are a longitudinal zonal structure of the flowing waters, which is based on the sequence of typical zenoses (civil communities). The fish habitat is divided into the following biozootic regions: Epirhithral (upper trout region), metarhithral (lower trout region), hyporhithral (groom region), epipotamal (barb region) and metapotamal (breach region). In the current national assessment scheme, waters of the hyporhithral and epipotamal (barbarous region) were divided into two and three regions respectively. The fish regions and the fish guides assigned to them in combination with the flowing water bioregion provide the water type-specific reference status for the fish fauna. The data level is in line with the 2015 National Water Management Plan (NGP) and will be updated as appropriate after the publication of the NGP 2021.
