Thromboembolic diseases, which are caused by thrombi, account for 1 in 4 deaths worldwide, and more effective antithrombotic therapy with a low risk of bleeding is needed. Thrombi are known to become harder over time and may persist long-term; while, some of them undergo early spontaneous dissolution and disappearance. We focused on the diversity of the natural course of thrombi and investigated what is happening in the thrombus after formation using high-throuput RNA sequencing. We believe that this paper will be of interest to the readership of your journal because most of the understanding regarding thrombosis have been focusing on thrombus formation, and the underlying mechanisms of thrombus maturation had been left unknwon.This study used thrombi which were retrieved from the cerebral artery of patients with stroke and determined that SPP1, which encodes osteopontin is one of the key genes related to extracellular matrix formation in thrombi.
