Library Membership 1 July 2026

The report reflects the total number of active library members across all City of Cape Town (CCT) libraries at a specific point in time. Active members are defined as members holding valid library cards that had not expired at the time the report was generated. Library cards are valid for a period of two years from the date of issue. Library membership is available and free to all persons residing within the City of Cape Town metropolitan area. Persons residing outside the metropolitan area, including those living along the municipal boundaries, as well as persons temporarily residing within the City who are able to collect their library cards, may also register as members on payment of an annual subscription fee. Subscription‑paying members may select a borrowing option that allows for either ten (10) or three (3) items. LIS also offers organisational membership options, which provide for block loans of library material with extended loan periods. Organisational membership is available to the following categories of institutions: Residential institutions, including old‑age homes, retirement villages, children’s homes, and places of safety for children; and Corporate institutions, including businesses, schools, crèches, home‑schooling entities, and correctional services institutions.
