The purpose of this experiment was to see if the addition of sialic acid activated the GacS-GacA regulon, which includes >300 genes. Overall design: Cultures were grown to OD~0.6, and then split in half. 2 mM sialic acid was added to one culture but not to the other. After 20 minutes of incubation with sialic acid, RNA was extracted from the + or - sialic acid samples for RNA-seq.
