Microorganisms in deep terrestrial subsurface environments are generally metabolically quite inactive. This is due to limited supply of electron donors and acceptors. When the environmental parameters change, e.g. due to influx of C-1 carbon substrates the microbial community rapidly reactivates. In this study the activated microbial groups were identified by sequencing based on increased transcription of ribosomal 16SrRNA.
