Because circulating DNA (cirDNA) are mainly detected as mononucleosome-associated circulating DNA (mono-N cirDNA) in blood apoptosis has until now been considered as the main source of cirDNA. The mechanism of cirDNA release into the circulation, however, is still not fully understood.
