State of Technology Transfer in the Natural Hazards Research Infrastructure (NHERI) Research: 2021 Annual Report

Formed in 2019, the NHERI Technology Transfer Committee (TTC) with support of the NHERI Network Coordination Office educates researchers —especially young researchers—about typical ways that research is implemented. The TTC also will assist NHERI researchers with implementation issues specific to a particular award. TTC members have evaluated a sample of active projects through analysis of the research plan and development, and interviews to researchers to determine the state if implementation planning within the NHERI community of researchers. Overall, the TTC found that implementation potential is strongly related to research planning as well as the level of interest and efforts by the researchers to disseminate the applicability of the results. In addition, Appendix A, Mechanisms for Implementation of NHERI Research Results includes strategies for technology transfer. TTC members are volunteers with ample experience in standards design, code development and applied technology as well as knowledge of all the organizations and institutions around such activities. This report is focused on research awards that appear to have high implementation potential. A second study is underway focusing on awards that, based on the project summaries, do not have high potential for immediate implementation.
