Macaca fascicularis alpha globin amplicon sequencing

Hemoglobin is an important protein in vertebrates for the transport of oxygen and is also utilized by parasitic malaria protozoans. Hemoglobin is a tetramer made up of two beta globin and two alpha globin subunits. Beta globin is encoded by a single beta globin locus and alpha globin is typically encoded by duplicated loci. The objective of the study was to quantify the sequence variation of alpha globin genes in long-tailed macaques. Genomic DNA isolated from Macaca fascicularis individuals from a captive colony in the United Kingdom was used for sequencing. Amplicon sequencing was used to amplify and deep sequence exon 2 of HBA1 and HBA2 from 78 macaques.
