A statutory acknowledgement is a formal acknowledgement by the Crown of the mana of tangata whenua over a specified area. It recognises the particular cultural, spiritual, historical and traditional association of an iwi with the site, which is identified as a statutory area. Statutory areas only relate to Crown‐owned land and include areas of land, geographic features, lakes, rivers, wetlands, and coastal marine areas. Only Statutory Acknowledgement and Deed of Recognition areas from the relevant settlement documents have been included. The following iwi settlements have been included in this dataset : Ngāti Toa Rangātira Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika Rangitāne o Wairarapa Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa (initialled a settlement, not yet ratified as of June 2020) Rangitane o Manawatu (in Horowhenua DC area only)
