Performing global gene expression profiling for different types of keratinocytes colonies can provide important information that might help in understanding the biology and ontogeny of epidermal skin stem cells. We used microarrays to detail the global gene expression profiling for different types of keratinocytes colonies including Holoclones (stem cells), Meroclones (transient amplifying cells), and Paraclones (differentiated cells) . Overall design: A total of 100 colonies per foreskin sample (n=6) were analyzed. The classification was based on the percentage of aborted colonies (< 3 mm2 in diameter); When 0–5% of colonies were aborted the clone was scored as holoclone which represents the stem cells. When more than 95% of the colonies were aborted, the clone was classified as paraclone which represents the differentiated cells. When more than 5%, but less than 95% of the colonies were aborted, the clone was classified as meroclone which represent transient amplifying cells
