Preparing Health Professionals for Environmental Health and Climate Change: A Challenge for Europe. Proposal for a Position document.

Based on the ideas shared at a conference on this theme which was held in London on 17th September 2025 the Executive Presidency of European Medical Association decided to summarise its position in the area of professional training in broad aspects of environmental health (EH). This document identifies gaps in current training; lays out a vision for a harmonised, competency-based environmental health curriculum, proposes mechanisms for integration into training systems; recommends governance and quality-assurance standards and issues a call to action for European institutions, national authorities, and education providers. This initial proposal will be further developed in consultation and cooperation with WHO, European Commission, Universities, NGOs and the private sector. This process will require shared principles of independence, transparency, evidence-based content, and cross-border coherence in curriculum design and delivery. It is expected that, based on such further consultation, EMA and its partner organisations will produce concrete proposals relevant to the European institutions responsible for further education, professional development, and registration of professional experience as operational roles in society.
