This dissertation discusses the use of institutional repositories as a tool for socialization of scientific knowledge in the academic environment by Library Science teachers from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. It also discusses how the socialization and the production of scientific knowledge relates to the practice of teaching and research in higher education. The socialization of knowledge is thought within the macro process of scientific communication, its new dynamics and trends. The Science Information is the area devoted to the study of processes creation, socialization and appropriation of knowledge. The research presented in this paper analyzes how that the teachers in the area of Information Science understand and use the repositories. The results point to a common understanding that this instrument is effective for the dissemination of scientific knowledge and to the keeping of the intellectual memory of the institution. It was detected a low utilization of the instrument by the teachers, despite the fact that they frequently recommend the students to use it. The work also raises the sources of information that can be used for research and how they are treated and perceived by the teachers.
