Association between social support and major depression disorder in US adults: insights from NHANES Objective: To examine how the social support with five-dimensional aspects the risk of major depression disorder (MDD) with more stringent criteria according with epidemiologic data among the middle-aged and older adults from the United States. Methods: The social support questionnaires in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)consisted of five dimensions: emotional support, financial support, frequency of attending religious services, number of close friends, and marital status. MDD was defined as a score ≥15 on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scale. Binary logistic regression model was used to estimate the association between social support and MDD. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess the predictive ability of social support for MDD. Propensity score matching (PSM) was employed to create baseline-balanced cohorts, and logistic regression analysis was subsequently performed on the PSM-derived cohort to further evaluate the robustness of the results. Results: Multivariate binary logistic regression analysis showed that higher financial support, marital status, close friends≥6, and annual religious services attendance≥52 were significantly negatively associated with MDD. The AUC analysis indicated social support had a well-discriminatory power for MDD. The sensitivity analysis after further PSM indicated that the effect of social support components on MDD was consistent with the main results. Conclusions: In brief, sufficient social support was linked to a lower risk of MDD among the middle-aged and elderly population in the United States. Future interventional studies are warranted to evaluate whether enhancing social support can prevent or improve MDD.
