Aquaculture: Water Quality/Analytical Chemistry

The Water Quality Laboratory maintains EPA and state required self-monitoring of BML seawater discharges, performing state certified chemical analyses. Additionally, this group monitors water quality within aquaculture systems and participates in analytical research within the aquaculture program. During this past year, the Water Quality lab met all requirements state for maintaining certified status for the water quality lab at BML, and assisted other aquaculture groups with water quality analyses. The Water Quality/Analytical Chemistry Lab participated with the Nutrition group in developing improved techniques for the analysis and identification by high resolution gas chromatography of long chain fatty acids associated with the lipid requirements in crustaceans. The lab also performed hydrogenation of long chain fatty acids for the Nutrition group. The service and research functions of this lab are expected to continue.
