EXAMINATION OF BULK SOIL FOR RADIOCARBON DATABLE MATERIAL FROM THE UTAH VALLEY UNIVERSITY PAYSON TRENCH SITE, UTAH

Five bulk soil samples from the Utah Valley University Payson Trench site in central Utah were floated to recover organic fragments suitable for radiocarbon dating. These samples were recovered from silty sand exposed in a paleoseismic trench on the Wasatch Fault south of Payson. Botanic components and detrital charcoal were identified, and potentially radiocarbon datable material was separated. Charred material will be submitted to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for dating to determine the timing of earthquakes on this part of the fault.
