A denitrification reactor packed with polycaprolactone (PCL) as a carbon source and biofilm carrier was used to remove the NO3--N in water of recirculating aquaculture system in the current experiment for 115 days. Hydraulic retention time was set as 6 h and the water flow rate was 0.95 L/h. The removal rates of NO3--N were ranged from 34.67 to 155.7 g NO3--N /m3 d with the effluent NO3--N concentrations ranged between 1.62 mg/L and 72.25 mg/L. Bacteria community structures in the bioflim of the PCL granules were analyzed using Illumina MiSeq sequencing technology. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were predominant in the inoculum with relative abundance of 63.9% and 27.4%. There were three genus, Acidovorax, Azospira and Diaphorobacter, that are capable of both degrading PCL and denitrification that are capable of both degrading PCL and denitrification NO3--N. No obvious changes in the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra of PCL before and after being used were observed. The study indicates that PCL-packed reactors may be applied and optimized for removing nitrate from aquaculture effluents.
