This study investigates the sources of cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy fields and its accumulation in topsoil and rice grains in the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan region of Hunan Province, China. Data collection spanned fiveyears (2016-2020) across four sites with different pollution characteristics. The research methodology includes the following steps:Soil Sampling: A five-point sampling method was used to collect soil samples (0-20 cm) from the cultivated layer at harvest time. Samples were air-dried, ground, and sieved for analysis of soil pH, total Cd, and available Cd (DTPA-extractable).Atmospheric Deposition: Atmospheric deposition samples were collected monthly using three simple deposition jars at each site. The samples consisted of a mixture of dry and wet depositions, with ethylene glycol added to prevent microbial contamination.Fertilizer Sampling: Fertilizer samples from local farmers were collected, and fertilization practices were documented. Organic fertilizers were mainly sourced from the livestock area in Liuyang.Irrigation Water Sampling: Water samples were collected at the inlet and runoff of irrigation water during the crop growing period to determine heavy metal content.Crop Sampling: Five plants with similar growth characteristics were collected at each site during harvest. Samples were washed, blanched, dried, ground, and sieved.Chemical analysis of Cd concentration in all samples was conducted using an inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer and a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer. Soil pH was measured using a portable pH meter. Quality control was maintained using standard reference materials.The dataset collected in this study has significant potential for reuse in environmental science, agriculture, and pollution control research. It provides valuable information on Cd contamination sources, soil and crop Cd accumulation, and the impact of different land uses on Cd levels in paddy fields.
