Many actinomycete bacteria synthesise polyene macrolides, which are of interest as antifungal antibiotics. Couchioplanes caeruleus synthesises the disaccharide-modified heptaene 67-121C. The genome of this organism was sequenced to investigate 67-121C biosynthesis, and to identify biosynthetic genes for other potentially valuable bioactive compounds.
