VPRS 12646 Toll Ledger

The Central Roads Board, beginning in 1853, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).One of the means whereby the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges was financed was by the charging of tolls along main roads and for the crossing of rivers. Toll funds were utilised for the letting of construction and maintenance contracts.This series allocates a double page to each toll facility. On the righthand side are the names of the Collector and any assistant, details of the terms of arrangement (such as leases) with the amounts expected from that arrangement. On the lefthand side are the details as recorded at each payment of the receipt of revenue from that toll with the date, the particulars (collections 0r rent) and the amounts. It was reserialised in 2001 as part of the ARAD Project.
