The impact of substratum surface properties on biofilm community structure was investigated using molecular community analysis on laboratory biological aerated filter (BAF) reactors. Two substratum surfaces that differed only in surface roughness and conductivity were created via surface coating, and used to develop biofilms in the experimental (i.e., modified substratum surface) and control (i.e., original substratum surface) BAF reactors. 16S rRNA gene-based pyrosequencing revealed that the different substratum surfaces resulted in distinct profiles of major microbial populations during two separate reactor startups.
