Heritages of Hunger: A Repository of Famine Legacies

This database was created by the Heritages of Hunger project and funded by NWO through the NWA-ORC programme (NWA.1160. 18.197). It contains entries related to European famines that can be used in classroom teaching, museums and heritage practices, and that can also inspire artists, filmmakers, NGOs and journalists. The entries in the database provide access to, amongst others, artworks, illustrations, maps, historical documents, literature, children's fiction, music, photographs and monuments. Search filters make it possible to look up materials per famine, per period, but also per theme, thereby enabling a comparative perspective on famines. Such transhistorical and transnational perspectives make it possible to better understand the causes and dynamics of famines, and to see analogies between ways in which communities dealt with hunger crises. The database also provides materials on (trans)national solidarity during famines.
