Data for "#KampalaPotholeExhbition: A multimodal discourse analysis of counter public narratives critiquing poor road maintenance in Uganda’s capital city."

This data set was created as part of a study that uses multimodal discourse analysis and social semiotic theory to examine the counter public discursive strategies used by the Ugandan public to protest poor road maintenance in the nation’s capital Kampala in a viral hashtag called #KampalaPotholeExhbition two years ago. Using Twitter/X data consisting of 198 photos and videos over the five-day official protest period, we found that protesters significantly relied on visual discourse as a tool of protest. Four dominant discursive strategies emerged as central to this campaign: 1) Humor, 2) Direct criticism 3) emotive and 4) unifying discourse.
