Wetlands are estimated to be the largest natural source of CH4 in the global CH4 budget. However, because of the large point-to-point variability in observed CH4 emissions from the marshes, the range of uncertainties in global estimates of emissions from the marshes is large, and further accumulation of observational data and analysis of the sources of flux variability are required.Kushiro Mire is the largest natural wetland in Japan, stretches to the north of kushiro city in eastern Hokkaido, Japan. To understand CH4 emissions in subarctic marshes located in the mid-latitudes, we measured CH4 fluxes during midsummer using the gradient method in the fen (waterlogged communities dominated by reeds and sedges).
