varieD Dataset

Dataset description varieD is a large-scale, UAV-derived trajectory dataset developed for the analysis of multimodal road-user behavior, traffic operations, and road safety in urban environments particularly in school zones. The dataset contains 64,534 georeferenced trajectories extracted from approximately 29 hours of aerial recordings collected at 28 locations across 10 municipalities in Flanders, Belgium. The selected sites cover four infrastructure categories: intersections, roundabouts, road segments, and kiss-and-ride facilities. The recordings were collected in and around school environments, particularly during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal periods, when interactions between vulnerable road users and motorized traffic are frequent. The dataset includes seven road-user classes: Pedestrian Bicycle Motorcycle Car Medium Vehicle Bus Heavy Vehicle Each trajectory is identified by a unique trackID within its recording and contains time-indexed information describing the object class, elapsed recording time, Cartesian position, oriented object footprint, speed, acceleration, and movement direction (data_dictionary). The provided attributes include: Object identifier and road-user class Elapsed time from the beginning of the recording Cartesian coordinates of the object center Front-left, front-right, rear-right, and rear-left corner coordinates Speed and its Cartesian components Acceleration and its Cartesian components Tangential and lateral acceleration Velocity-direction angle Position and footprint coordinates are expressed in the Cartesian spatial reference system (WGS 1984 - UTM 31N). Speed is provided in metres per second, acceleration in metres per second squared, and the velocity-direction angle in radians. Trajectories retain the native sampling frequency of their source recordings. Approximately 73.37% of the observations were recorded at 30 Hz, 21.30% at 25 Hz, and 5.33% at 60 Hz. Access and permitted use The dataset is intended for non-commercial scientific research and educational use, subject to the license and usage conditions. Users should cite both the dataset and the associated data paper in all resulting publications, presentations, software, or derived datasets. Sample description The sample contains a continuous 59.96-second trajectory segment selected from a 44-minute recording at the Elfde-Liniestraat × Vildersstraat site in Hasselt. The sample contains 101,638 observations from 106 unique trajectories sampled at approximately 29.97 Hz. Six road-user classes are represented: pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, cars, medium vehicles, and buses. This file is a representative sample extracted from a longer trajectory recording and is provided to demonstrate the structure, variables, and temporal resolution of the complete dataset. The timestamps have been reset so that the first retained observation begins at 0 seconds. This normalization was performed by subtracting the first retained source timestamp from all timestamps in the sample. The temporal intervals, sampling rate, trajectory durations, track IDs, coordinates, velocities, accelerations, and other trajectory attributes remain unchanged. Because the sample represents a fixed continuous time interval, some trajectories may be truncated at the beginning or end of the sample.
