This database was produced as part of the project Hi-BicLab. History Lab for Sustainable Urban Mobilities: Lisbon's cycling policies, funded by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.) under the grant number EXPL/FER-HFC/0847/2021, http://doi.org/10.54499/EXPL/FER-HFC/0847/2021. It provides historical data on the supply and demand for the different transport modes operating in Lisbon municipality and Lisbon District. The transport modes considered refer to individual transport (i.e., cycling and driving) and public transport, and excludes walking due to data unavailability. The data collected covers the period from 1937 to 2022 and is organised in 5-year periods between 1940 and 2020. The starting year is 1937 because this was the first year in which a census of road traffic, including motor vehicles, was carried out in Portugal. The final year is 2022 because the year 2020 was marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, which had a dramatic effect on both transport demand and transport supply. Transport demand is measured in terms of the number of passengers transported by a given operator for public transport (buses and trams; rail; ferries; metro), the average annual daily traffic (AADT) for passenger cars and bicycles, the stock of passenger cars and of bicycles, the number of passenger cars and of bicycles per 1000 inhabitants. In the case of ferryboats, the data also considers the number of passenger vehicles transported. Transport supply is measured in terms of the total seat kilometres (seat-kms) produced by public transport operators, and the length of the main road network (i.e., motorways, main expressways, and secondary expressways) in the case of individual motorised transport.
