Bacillus YC2 was isolated from the root tubers of Pelargonium sidoides DC, atraditional medicinal plant endemic to South Africa. This strain exhibited strong antifungal activity against pathogenic fungi including Cryptococcus neoformans, Candida albicans, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium oxysporum. Mining of the genome sequence revealed biosynthetic gene clusters encoding biosynthetic machinery to produce the antifungal lipopeptides, fengycin and a novel iturin variant.
