Increasing evidence suggests gut flora is implicated in the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). We analysed the overall structure of microbiota in patients with colorectal cancer and healthy controls by pyrosequencing 16S rRNA genes. The microbiota of intestinal lumen and the cancerous tissue and matched noncancerous normal tissue was studied. Mucosa-adherent microbial composition were also surveyed using rectal swab samples due to the structure of tissue adherent bacterial community may be altered by bowel cleansing.
