E. coli-Related NPDES Facilities in Michigan

This layer contains the locations, facility names and permit numbers for NPDES permits that may be sources of E. coli, including; industrial storm water, sanitary wastewater facilities, concentrated animal feeding operations, biosolids land-applications, combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and municipal storm water. Different types of permits have different colors and shapes to represent them on the mapper. Storm water can become contaminated by illicit connections, improper garbage disposal, contact with industrial materials/waste, and pet or wildlife waste. Non-industrial sanitary facilities are wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and stabilization lagoons (WWSLs), which treat sewage and have discharges to surface waters. These dischargers have permit conditions that they must follow, including monitoring and discharge limits, to ensure the E. coli water quality standard is not exceeded because of the discharge. Active or passive disinfection and other treatment is required, depending on the type of facility. CAFOs have permit conditions designed to eliminate discharges and reduce contamination of surface water. Please be aware that some CAFOs have multiple facilities that are covered under their permit, but may not be represented on this map. CAFO land application areas are also not represented in this layer. EGLE strives for accuracy, but the facility location information is supplied by the permit applicant and may contain errors.
