New protein sources are needed to feed agricultural animals to meet the growing demand for meat by humans. In this study, two yeast species (Saccharomyces cerevisiea and Wickerhamomyces anomalus) was fed at increasing levels (20, 40, 60% replacement of fish meal) to rainbow trout as a sustainable alternative to fish meal over 10 weeks in a research station in northern Sweden. Sequencing the bacteria from their gut showed that high levels of yeast in the diet can affect the diversity and abundance of gut bacteria, especially the W. anomalus yeast.
