The present study aimed to examine how an employee’s vocational delay of gratification (VDG) behavior leads to her/his spouse's failed work engagement. Drawing upon the perspectives of resource depletion and the role theory, we proposed that employees' limited resources are taken up by VDG and thus less devoted to family roles, resulting in more work-family conflict, which in turn translates into a spousal stressor of ego-depletion that makes it difficult for spouses to engage in their own work. Results of a multi-source, time-lagged data with 377 full-time dual-earner couples supported this spillover-crossover-spillover 4-stage mediation model. The results of this study extend the delay of gratification and ego-depletion research literature and indicate the importance of considering the potential cost of employees’ career decisions to spouses.
