Interseasonal and interannual variability: 1986 to 1993

This atlas documents the interseasonal and interannual variability in both the tropics and extratropics for the 8-year period from January 1986 through November 1993. The atlas is designed to serve three primary purposes: 1. Document the seasonal evolution of the major Pacific warm episodes (1986/87, 1991-1993), termed El Nino/ Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, and cold episode (1988-89) that occurred since the 1982/83 ENSO (Arkin et al. 1983). 2. Document the seasonal extratropical atmospheric circulation, surface temperature and precipitation anomalies in both hemispheres during the above period. 3. Document the primary modes of low-frequency variability (termed teleconnection patterns) of the atmospheric circulation in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics, and their evolution during the above period.
