Soluble forms of selenium (Se), including selenate and selenite, are toxic water contaminants. To develop a novel biological method to remove selenate/selenite from industrial wastewater containing high salinity that can inhibit biological activities and thereby Se removal from wastewater, we isolated a novel halotolerant Se-reducing bacterium, Citrobacter koseri Y2. Based on the results of phenotypic characterization, this strain has been confirmed to have a unique property that can reduce selenate and selenite under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Therefore, this project analyzed complete genome of C. koseri Y2 in order to clarify the mechanisms of selenate and selenite reduction by this unique halotolerant Se-reducing bacterium in details.
