Number of districts with contaminated water in India 2022, by contamination type

Most of the districts in India have excess amounts of toxic metals in the groundwater. In 2022, groundwater in 491 Indian districts had high concentrations of iron, making it the prime water pollutant in the South Asian country. Arsenic was also found in groundwater in more than 200 districts across India that year.
