Conveyor with a buffering function and a method for operating such a conveyor

The invention relates to a conveyor for cross-feeding elongated articles (2) in a feeding path. The conveyor comprises a control unit configured to control the conveyor to change between a normal mode and a buffering mode. The control unit is configured to transfer the conveyor from the normal mode to the buffering mode by on one hand creating a step down (11) to a lower level of the feeding path to make articles (2) reaching said step (11) falling down to be stocked on top of each other on a conveyor part (13) downstream said step (11) and on the other hand stopping the movement of this conveyor part (13). The control unit then controls the step down (11) to gradually move upstream in the feeding path once the buffering mode is obtained.
