The Public Works Department (VA 669) had wide-ranging responsibilities for all public works and buildings, including construction, maintenance and fitting out of these buildings. Other major responsibilities included roads and bridges, ports and harbours, local government and water supply. The Department also had involvement in land reclamation schemes at such places as Koo-Wee-Rup and Condah.This series consists of letter-press copies of correspondence from Inspecting Engineers to the Engineer in Charge in Melbourne. Correspondence consists of reports of inspections made for the purpose of verifying and adjusting specifications for works, for reporting on the execution of works throughout Victoria and arrangements for visits of inspection.
