PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing cellulose nanofiber having a nano-size， having a high degree of crystallinity and having a large aspect ratio by a chemical method being an energy-saving method without need of any physical pulverization and capable of being performed under mild reaction conditions and to provide a method for producing a modified cellulose nanofiber that includes modifying the surface of the cellulose nanofiber through esterification or urethanization. SOLUTION: The method for producing a cellulose nanofiber in the invention includes impregnating cellulose with a fibrillation solution including dimethylsulfoxide， at least one carboxylic acid anhydride selected from acetic acid anhydride and propionic acid anhydride， and sulfuric acid to fibrillate the cellulose.
