Replication code for "Consolidation of Local Health Authorities and Mortality in the Italian NHS"

This repository contains the replication code for “Consolidation of Local Health Authorities and Mortality in the Italian NHS”, published in the Journal of Health Economics (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhealeco.2026.103174). The underlying data used in this project come from several administrative sources. Data from the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Health are publicly available. Inter-municipal travel times, the SNAI classification, and population data are released by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) and are also publicly available. Municipal-level mortality data by 5-year age groups were provided by Istat following a fee-based data-processing request and under restricted-access conditions. These data were accessed separately by age group and by cause of death. The authors are not allowed to redistribute these data. The two restricted-access mortality datasets cannot be linked to each other. The file “Instructions on how to access the data.pdf” provides further information.
