Auslan (Australian Sign Language) Corpus

The aim of this project was to securing a corpus of digital video recordings of naturalistic, controlled and elicted data from Auslan (Australian Sign Language) deaf native signers, before finding reasonable numbers of such signers becomes increasingly difficult through adding and decreasing incidence rates of permanent early childhood severe and profound deafness. The corpus will support initial and future corpus-based grammatical description of the language and serve as basis for comparison with emerging signed languages in newly created deaf communities in the developing world.
The collection includes 9 video recordings of participants using Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and associatiate metadata/annotations. The video sessions have been edited (trimmed) into individual clips selected for annotation and annotated using ELAN http://tla.mpi.nl/tools/tla-tools/elan/elan-description/. Most of the video recordings can be accessed from the Endangered Languages Archive website at http://elar.soas.ac.uk/deposit/johnston2012auslan.
