This is the Rhode Island Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) 1996 Lobster Research and Management Project annual report and assessment of the commercial American lobster (Homarus americanus) fishery in Rhode Island. Since the lobster resource supports the most economically important single-species fishery in Rhode Island, a long term monitoring program to gain biological and catch/effort data was initiated in November 1990. A sea sampling design was developed by which both biological and catch/effort data could be collected areally and temporally with sufficient precision for stock assessments. Grant no. NA46FI0084
