This series consists of two printed forms that were completed when a new employee was engaged for the purpose of taxation. the first of these forms document where the employee was engaged in addition to basic information such as their work number, name, permanent address, and the date employment was commenced and completed. They are signed by the officer in charge.The second form records details provided by casual employees that were aggregated on the advice of the employees engaged. Details recorded on this form includes the employees' name in full, date and place of birth, whether a returned soldier, marital status, dependants, whether employed previously by the Department, their residential address, date commenced, designation, and employee’s number. They are signed by the employee.The Dredge Service operated primarily from Newcastle c.1875 until the last dredge was sold in 1976/78. Many NSW rivers were subject to siltation, flooding, and bars at their entrances. The dredges were employed to keep the river entrances open for coastal shipping, punts and flood mitigation.
