Purpose: The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of innovation enabled through strategic information systems (SIS) via the strategy-as-practice approach in moderating environmental dynamism in Brazilian organizations. Methods: Structural equation modeling was performed using the statistical technique of Partial Least Squares-Path Modeling (PLS-PM) and a post hoc analysis to identify unobserved heterogeneity for a sample of 256 Brazilian companies from different sectors. Results: The results reveal that SIS had a strong and significant influence on exploitation and exploration innovation. Environmental uncertainty in dynamism moderation was not found in the relationship between SIS and exploitation innovation. However, SIS had a strong and significant effect on innovation for exploration with high levels of dynamism. Unobserved heterogeneity was identified for two segments of the sample, demonstrating a strong path effect between SIS and exploration and exploitation innovation with high dynamism in service companies with more than 500 employees. Conclusions: The study extends the strategy-as-practice and innovation literature by identifying SIS as alternative planning processes that enable innovation in organizations in environments with high rates of change and unpredictability.
