Aphanizomenon flos-aquae is a filamentous diazotrophic cyanobacterium that regularly produces harmful blooms in temperate fresh and brackish water environments. Intensive growth of these cyanobacteria greatly alters food web structure, carbon flux and nutrient cycles. Some A. flos-aquae strains were found to produce toxins and teratogens that adversely affect higher trophic levels. Main aim of this project was to sequence and investigate A. flos-aquae genome.
