Whilst debit card transactions increased by 700 million between 2020 and 2021, a Mexican would make only 40 debit card payments per year. This figure was significantly less than the per capita use of debit cards in the United States, which consisted of 335 transactions per person in 2021. Debit cards were not a popular in-store payment method in Mexico as most of the population favored the use of cash money.
