Euterpe oleracea and cerebral malaria

Cerebral malaria (CM) is one of the most severe neurological complications caused by Plasmodium falciparum, whose pathogenesis is complex and still little elucidated, being associated with cognitive behavioral and motor alterations. In attempt to prevent the development of this condition, experimental models have been used to test new therapeutic agents, such as natural products with antioxidant properties. In this context, it is relevant to evaluate the protective effect of Açaí berry (Euterpe oleracea) during the evolution of experimental cerebral malaria (ECM) induced in murine model by the inoculation of Plasmodium berghei ANKA strain.
