Jazz Drum Solo

This repository contains a curated collection of 200 jazz drum solos spanning eight decades of recorded history, from the 1940s to the 2010s, encoded in MIDI format. The dataset encompasses a broad range of jazz styles and periods, reflecting the evolution of drumming technique and musical language across the genre's most significant eras. It is intended as a resource for researchers, educators, and practitioners working in the fields of music information retrieval, computational musicology, and jazz studies.In addition to the dataset, this repository includes a complete Python-based pipeline for symbolic music processing and generation. The codebase covers MIDI preprocessing and tokenization into a text-based symbolic representation, fine-tuning of a DistilGPT-2 language model on drum sequence data, autoregressive generation of novel jazz drum patterns, and conversion of generated MIDI output to audio format via FluidSynth. The model treats drum sequences as structured text, enabling the application of natural language processing techniques to rhythmic pattern generation.
