Degrades dichloroethenes and vinyl chloride. Dehalococcoides mccartyi BAV1

Dehalococcoides sp. BAV1. This organism was isolated from a microcosm that could dechlorinate polychlorinated ethenes. It is capable of using vinyl chloride as an electron acceptor (and in the process dechorinating the carcinogenic compound) producing ethene and inorganic chloride and using acetate as the electron donor. This organism may be useful in bioremediation of contaminated sites.
