Understanding Developmental Regression in Children

Developmental regression refers to loss of established skills, like saying words. It may be an early symptom of a serious childhood condition and occur before other symptoms of a specific condition are recognised. An early diagnosis may lead to specific treatments, reduce family stress, improve quality of life and influence family planning. Currently there is inconsistent care for children who present with developmental regression. There is not an agreed approach to the definition, clinical assessment or investigation for a likely cause. This program of research has advanced an agreed definition and approach to investigating children with developmental regression.
