Biomimetic Soft Elastic Tubular Reactor for Investigating Mixing Dynamics and Microbial Fermentation in Simulated Infant Colonic Conditions

My doctoral research explored how early-life nutrition influences the development of the infant gut microbiota. I developed a soft elastic tubular reactor (SETR) that mimics gentle intestinal movement to better reflect conditions in the infant colon. Using this system, I studied how different milk-derived nutrients, including human milk and infant formula, interact with physical forces to affect microbial growth and competition. The results show that mechanical motion, fluid properties, and nutrient composition together shape microbial activity and balance. This research provides new insights to support the design of infant nutrition strategies that promote gut health early in life.
